The first issue of Le Plateau appeared on October 6, 1996, serving the same territory as Le Guide Mont-Royal. The latter has since folded, however, leaving Le Plateau as the only weekly newspaper to cover the entire Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood.

Le Plateau is a precursor of sorts, being launched by Transcontinental long before the Plateau Mont-Royal was singled out as North America's trendiest neighbourhood.
